- Title Burned Snake With Rotten Scales Rescued After Being Curled Around Hot Lamp
- Summary Veterinary student Catherine Liebler drove over 400 miles from Hautcharage,Luxembourg to Passau, on the Germany-Austria border, to rescue a rare-coloured Piebald ball python who was found in a burning hot terrarium wrapped around a hot lamp. The 27-year-old rescuer works for CRL Reptiles & More, an organisation founded in 2009 that recently specialised in reptile rescues. Catherine received a call about a one and a half-year-old python on the brink of death so sprung into action and made the rescue on 6 April. After deciding to cross the border and make the long journey to give Zeus the python a fighting chance, she was shocked to find him in an enclosure many degrees higher than it should have been, with the burned snake soldered onto a heated lamp. He had lots of pale green coloured bruises along his half-shed body from an abundance of mites in his terrarium. These parasites infest poorly kept terrariums and suck the blood from snakes, sometimes inducing bruising in extreme cases like this one. She carefully placed him in a polystyrene box with newspaper to pad him out during the seven hour drive back to her home in Germany. The injured snake also sustained bruising to his head from when he fell out of his enclosure that was placed on a high ledge in his owner's home. Catherine said: "I couldn't believe my eyes when I first time saw all the bruises and all the wounds. "I almost thought that he would probably not survive as the scale rot was already so, so, so, so heavy." When they arrived at Catherine's house she gave him a medicated bath to treat his extensive injuries - without this, his life span was only about two weeks due to the spread of the scale rot on his underbelly. It was an emotional rescue for the dedicated rescuer because Zeus had been neglected for so long that he could not even fully shed his skin. She said: "We will try to rehome the pets after they are fully healed again, but sometimes, some are very special, and we keep them. "The bruises and the scale rot this animal has from neglectful owners is bad, but he is a fighter and I think his chances are good." "We just decided our beautiful rescue Zeus has found his forever home, he will stay with us for the rest of his life which is hopefully at least 20-25 years more."
