- Title Guy Creates Incredible Sunset Silhouettes Out Of Card!
- Summary I am John Marshall, 55, from Maine, USA. I run a non profit called Teach Her that offers college education to orphaned girls. www.teachher.org Sunset Selfies is just something I do for fun to get away from the computer. These videos were filmed over the past year, some in Maine, some during a visit to Florida, some during a job in New Jersey. Wherever I am, I can always find an open spot with a clear view of the setting sun to create my Sunset Selfies. Sunset Selfies began while I was spending some time on an island in Maine. One night as I was watching the sunset, I cut an alligator mask into an empty beer box and stuck it on my head for a self-timed picture. I was just playign around, but when I saw the silhouette that resulted, I was inspired to do more. Over the years, my cutouts have gotten more and more complicated, allowing me to make pretty much anything I can dream up. People seem to really love these images, and not just friends and family. They have been featured all over the world, from Rolling Stone Brazil to the Times of India to the Kelly Clarkson Show on National TV. There's something a little magical about them, especially when you see how simple and rough the cutouts can be. In silhouette, at sunset, all the imperfections disappear and a fantastical scene comes to life. My Sunset Selfies are a collaboration with nature. When I go out on a shoot I never know what I'm going to get. I also don't always know how to get the shot. It's a creative puzzle and I like that. I work alone so I'm constantly running back and forth to the camera to see how the shot turned out, then making small adjustments, always racing the setting sun. It's very hands on, from the drawing to the cutting to the posing and shooting, and I like that. It's more like creative play than anything else. But I'm happy so many people have been enjoying them. I always wanted to be a cartoonist as a kid, so this is my way of fulfilling that childhood dream. When I'm on the ground with a marker drawing on a big sheet of cardboard, I forget about anything else that I have to do. And it gets me outside to enjoy a beautiful sunset each day.
