- Title Rare Set of Thriving Five-Year-Old Conjoined Twins Share Four Arms and Two Legs
- Summary Chelsea Torres, 29, reveals her unique day-to-day as a mother to the rarest-form of conjoined twins joined at the pelvis. The Idaho-based Mum was two months pregnant when the midwife told her the unbelievable news she was carrying conjoined twins. Her daughters stun people online who watch the twins face the unique challenge of sharing four arms and two legs. The pharmacy technician from Blackfoot, Idaho, shares her special set of five-year-old twins Callie and Carter Torres on social media as they take on life side by side. In their most viral video, viewed 18.2 million on TikTok, the enthusiastic pair tumble around the family living room and perform the splits, demonstrating their passion for gymnastics. Other intriguing videos show the girls being fitted for a custom car seat, riding a modified double handlebar bicycle side-on. Chelsea said: "They attend normal school, we don't have any modifications in the house at this moment, the girls get around in the home just fine! "We have a specifically made car seat, walker, bike and two wheelchairs." Conjoined twins are classified by where they are joined on the body: Chelsea refers to Callie and Carter as "omphalo-ischiopagus" twins. Omphalopagus means to be conjoined near the belly button, as Callie and Carter are. The twins share the same liver and lower part of the small intestine and colon. In terms of clothing, Chelsea has a big job making sure her growing girls are always kitted out in well-fitted clothes. She reveals she buys regular clothes from any retailer, two sets of clothes in the same type and brand. "I measure the clothing, turn the clothing inside out and then cut an upside down U shape. "Then I sew them together while it's turned inside out." Even at just five years old, Chelsea says the two are developing their own personalities which is 'wonderful to see'. Chelsea said: "Carter is a gamer like her older brother, and Callie likes to play with little toys. "Carter is more demanding than Callie, Callie is very laid back." While Chelsea has different fears to other mothers, she also shares the same hopes and wishes for her children as any parent does. "There are many conjoined twins in the world who find love and who are dating. "I hope they find someone who loves them in the future." Still a medical anomaly, it is unknown what causes conjoined twins. Identical twins occur when a single fertilised egg splits and develops two individuals 8-12 days after conception. In the case of conjoined twins, the embryo splits too late - about 13 - 15 days after conception. The separation process stops before the process is complete. The doting Mum's biggest hope is that they learn to walk unaided in the near future. She admits that one of her fears is that the girls won't live as long as other twins - although doctors have told her they don't anticipate that they won't live to a healthy old age. ENDS
