- Title Lover's Lane Workers Racially Discriminate Customer!
- Summary I go by Lauren Mari. I am a Social Media Influencer from Detroit, MI. This video was filmed in Sterling Heights, MI. I visited Lover's Lane in Sterling Heights, MI approximately, 8pm on Saturday, May 1, 2021. I was accompanied by my sister, friend and her infant. My sister and I waited at the front door for our friend to get her stroller together. I had a shield over my face (not a mask). We noticed a couple of women staring at us and talking. My friend made it to the door and before we could open it, the assistant manager opened the door and said "TWO THINGS! 1. You can't come in here without an ACTUAL mask. And YOU can't bring that baby in here!" My friend asked, "Even an infant?." The assistant manager says, "NO KIDS UNDER 18!" and allows the door to close in our face. We were shocked at her rudeness. I cracked the door open and asked, "Ma'am, what is your name?" She replied, "Calysta, I am the Assistant Manager!" I thanked her and went to the car to get a proper mask so that I could purchase the bachelorette gift I came for. My sister and friend decided to stay in the car with the baby. We had no issues with the policy and fully complied. As soon as I walked in, the other young lady rushed to me requesting to take my temperature. I allowed her to. After, I proceeded to the shoe wall. The same young lady asked, "What can I help you with?" I told her I was fine and I knew where I was headed. She then (in a way trying to stop me), asked again, "What can we do for you???". I told her I already knew what I wanted and that I was fine. I felt like she was nervous to allow me to browse the store or walk around on my own, like I was going to steal or something. She made me feel like I was under their watchful eye. She then said something else and I said, "You know what, I just want to look at the shoes, and I'm not going to buy anything anymore because of the way you are treating me." I proceeded to look at the shoes. Not 10 seconds later, the assistant manager comes over to me and says, "Ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to leave." I asked her why. She says, "Because I can. Ma'am, I am refusing you service." I told her I was looking at shoes. She then says, "I AM GOING TO CALL THE COPS." At that very moment, I knew EXACTLY what that was. I looked around and saw a group of Caucasian ladies that appeared to be amused by the situation. I knew that no one would have my best interest at heart, if the cops came, so I decided to record everything from that point. Again, she says, "Ma'am I am asking you to leave." I ask her why. She says, "Because I can. I can legally refuse you service. I am refusing you service." Then she walks over to the phone. Due to the state of our country and the growing number of careless acts of police violence, I decided not to stick around. She bullied me out of the store. I decided to leave. I have three children and a life, and spending the weekend in jail wouldn't have been good for me. I had a feeling the cop would come and take me to jail just because this lady called. My sister then came in to see what we were talking about. I told her that Calysta was calling the police on me. She then asked why and said that she was being rude from the beginning. Calysta then gave this quick nonchalant, "Well, sorry!" I told her we were leaving and we'd take care of this the mature way- through corporate. I am hoping and praying that there is some recourse for her senseless racist actions. Although she did not spew racist slurs, the feeling I got as not being valued as a customer, being treated like a subpar individual, all based on appearances was very REAL. I felt 100% discriminated against. I felt that Calysta treated me poorly because of my appearance/race. She had NO respect for me as a person. This has been a very traumatic experience. It is embarrassing. It is sad. It is very REAL. I still have yet to get a response as to the reason, not from Calysta or Lover's Lane. My friend's and family are sad and appalled. The negative attention and racist comments I am receiving has been difficult to handle. Lover's Lane'sstatement was a joke, a poor attempt to try to cover for their business. Calysta's been"disciplined" and here's a $100 gift card. No, thanks. Since this situation, several people have come out confirmingdiscriminative behavior from this company and experiencing racism from Calysta.
