- Title Epic Pole Vault Fails by College Athlete
- Summary Ouch! Champion pole vaulter Deven Verela, at Saginaw Valley State University, Michigan, is going viral on TikTok thanks to his painful vaulting mishaps. Screams from spectators confirm the velocity with which the young sports star fell. 20-year-old Deven said: "When I was a freshman my Grandma told me about how she used to pole vault in her gym class and that she loved to do it, so I figured I would give it a shot." Despite his few misses, the impressive sportsman has a personal best of a towering 4.46 metres! When Deven has a huge fall, he said he anticipates how much it might hurt when he finally lands on - or off - the mat. He said: "It feels like I was falling for a very long time, then I hit and all I heard was a bunch of very loud gasps and when I opened my eyes I saw a mob of people around me asking if I could feel my feet and hands - if I could move them. "I could so that gave me relief, I thought I was paralyzed because I couldn't feel anything after I hit." The determined young vaulter has an extensive list of injuries from his training including a hole in his leg from a particularly bad fall, many muscle knots, hip bruises, and a nasty bum bruise he sustained in junior year when he landed in between two pads rather than on the mat. He has been vaulting for an impressive six years and said he always makes sure to 'get up and walk over to my teammates to crack a few jokes' so they know he's okay after a dodgy run. Deven's big goal is to clear 4.6 metres which will mark an impressive 15 feet. ENDS
