- Title Lucky Near-Death Escape: Kestrel Attacks Pair Of Barn Owls Protecting Eggs Inside Nest
- Summary Nesting barn owls caring for four eggs fought an opportunistic kestrel who took a chance on their nesting box - Dr. Motti Charter, a Wildlife Ecologist in Haifa, Israel, watched the scene unfold via his research centre's nest cameras. The female bird of prey swooped into the open nesting box on 27 February, closely watched by Dr. Motti, and the ensuing fight meant that the kestrel was lucky to escape with her life after the territorial father barn owl repeatedly attacked her. Gripping the kestrel with his long talons, the lighter coloured male owl retaliated to the intrusive bird's advances whilst the darker coloured female owl shielded her eggs. The barn owl cam is part of a citizen science study led by the GAIA Project, WBAIS and the Charter Group of Wildlife Ecology at the University of Haifa in Israel, and aids in the education of the environmental science students. Dr. Motti said that witnessing the bird 'fight for its life' was a shocking experience, and that the female owl will do all she can to protect her eggs whilst the male owl shrieks and jabs at the bird of prey.
