- Title Icebreaking Mission Launched To Help Stranded Cruise Ship
- Summary After a cruise ship found itself trapped in pack ice, the US Coast Guard was deployed to begin ice-breaking operations to rescue the boat. On January 17th, at approximately 11 p.m. local time, the cruise ship Scenic Eclipse II called on Polar Star after becoming stuck in pack ice about eight nautical miles from McMurdo Sound. The ship was able to make two quick passes of the cruise ship, resulting in the breaking of ice and was able to free the cruise liner. Once they were free, Polar Star then escorted the Scenic Eclipse II away from the pack ice and paved a way for them to follow.
