- Title Curious Penguin Hops Onboard Boat In A Unique Social Interaction
- Summary An adorable penguin hopped on board a researcher's boat in a unique social interaction. Ollie Tucker captured the footage on December 11th at Rothera Research Station, Antarctica. Ollie recalls thinking something had fallen off the boat due to a splash sound. However, his supervisor alerted him that a penguin had hopped onboard the boat. Although it is not uncommon, Ollie said that in his year of living at Rothera, this had never happened to him. Bizarrely, the penguin was not using the boat as an escape from a predator but out of curiosity. Ollie said: “Usually this happens because the penguin is escaping a predator, such as a leopard seal. “However, in this instance, given that the penguin was so relaxed and we were so close to land, it seems likely that it was just a social visit.” The group of researchers turned off their engines and sat quietly with the penguin for 10 minutes before it climbed out of the boat.
