- Title Quick-Thinking Officers Use Patience And Kindness To Rescue Non-Verbal Autistic Child From Roof
- Summary On October 3rd, deputies from the Sherwood Police Department in Oregon responded to multiple 911 calls regarding a young boy running around on the roof of a house. First-responding officers understood the special needs of the child, who is non-verbal and autistic, and employed calm communication, patience, and friendliness to calm the child. The boy, later identified as Rocky, managed to evade his grandmother’s care and climb onto the roof. Being elderly, his grandmother could not climb onto the roof herself to persuade him to come down. Luckily, the kind officers were able to persuade Rocky to wait with them on the roof until backup from the Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue department arrived. The two teams worked together to bring Rocky down from the roof and safely reunite him with his family. Sherwood Police Department commented, “The parents of this child gave us permission to use the footage for educational purposes about autism awareness.”
