After safely securing the Southern sea otter pup, which is a threatened species, in a carrier crate, wildlife experts recorded a clip of the pup vocalising. Vocalising is essential for reunification, as it attracts the mother’s attention. The wildlife experts cleverly anticipated that the pup would soon get too tired and would stop vocalising, so they used the recording to alert the mother, which can be heard in the video. After approximately two hours of searching and playing the recording of the pup’s vocalisation, a female otter appeared and approached the boat repeatedly. The team was able to gently place the pup in the water and the mother then came and collected the pup before it started swimming away with it. To ensure the mother and baby bonded appropriately, the team followed them for the next hour and luckily found that the two had bonded well. This emotional reunion clip moved hearts across the internet as it demonstrated the important work that wildlife centres carry out.
