- Title Miraculous Moment Woman With Parkinson's Disease Plays Clarinet During Brain Surgery
- Summary This Parkinson's patient played her beloved clarinet during brain surgery. At King’s College Hospital in London, Denise Bacon underwent the operation for doctors to study how the stimulation of the brain can help with the symptoms she experiences. The speech therapist, 65, underwent deep-brain stimulation to manage symptoms of her Parkinson’s Disease, allowing her to play her beloved clarinet once again. Denise was experiencing slowness of movement and muscle stiffness resulting from Parkinson’s disease, diagnosed in 2014, affecting her ability to walk, swim, dance, and play her clarinet. Using electrodes connected to a pulse generator, the surgeons were able to send electrical impulses to Denise’s brain, reducing her symptoms and giving her the ability to play her clarinet with much more ease. As a way of ensuring that the operation was successful, Denise was consciously playing the clarinet whilst doctors were carrying out the procedure. Denise said post-operation: “I remember my right hand being able to move with much more ease once the stimulation was applied, and this, in turn, improved my ability to play the clarinet, which I was delighted with. “I’m already experiencing improvements in my ability to walk, and I’m keen to get back in the swimming pool and on the dance floor to see if my abilities have improved there.” **ORIGINAL VIDEO AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST**
