- Title Heartbreaking Footage Shows Humpback Whale Calf Entangled In Fishing Gear
- Summary A humpback whale calf was seen caught in a long piece of fishing equipment whilst swimming alongside its mother. The footage was captured by Zak McNeill on September 28th, in Sydney, Australia. ORRCA Australia worked alongside the NSW National Parks whale disentanglement team and Mariners Rescue Middle Harbour to attempt to free the calf. The teams tracked the whale calf down and tracked the entangled humpback along the entire Northern Beaches coastline towards South Sydney. The disentanglement team were prevented from safely approaching the animal due to weather conditions. An animal tracker was placed on the animal for overnight monitoring. The operation reached a successful conclusion, as the tracker was recovered near Cronulla, with the fishing gear that originally entangled the whale. The whale freed itself from the equipment.
