- Title Moment Avalanche Is Triggered By Explosives At Popular Tourist Spot
- Summary Helicopter footage captured the moment that explosives were used to trigger an avalanche in New Zealand. The footage was taken by the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi on September 6th, in Milford Sound. Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s top tourist attractions and is at high risk of avalanches. The aerial footage captured the moment that explosives were used for avalanche mitigation. The avalanche could be seen falling on the western side of the Homer Tunnel, at a location called Avalanche Creek. The avalanche control programme was established in 1983 and they predict and manage risks from snow, ice and avalanches more effectively, while allowing year-round operation.
