- Title Heartbreaking Moment Baby Monkey Clings To Stuffed Animal As She's Rescued From Dead Mother's Body
- Summary An emotional video caught the moment vets removed a baby monkey from her mother's body after she died. The baby howler monkey, called Estrellita, was found clinging to her mother’s lifeless body after she was electrocuted by an unsafe power line in Costa Rica. Team members of International Animal Rescue were forced to use a plushie to detach the baby from her mother. Estrellita clung to the soft toy so she could feel safe and comforted. Thanks to the team, Estrellita spent just over two years in rehabilitation, where she slowly learned how to climb, how to forage, and how to survive without the mother she had lost so traumatically. At the beginning of this year, Estrellita was released back into the wild with several other monkeys, returning to her rightful home. A spokesperson for International Animal Rescue said: "Animals can’t tell the difference between a tree branch and a power line - until it’s too late. "As forests are fragmented by unregulated construction, wildlife are forced to navigate through urban areas, often using electrical wires as passageways. "The result is devastating. "The survival rate after electrocution is less than 1%. "Those who make it to a rescue centre face lengthy recovery times, and in many cases, permanent disability. "The impact ripples far beyond each individual – When an alpha male in a howler monkey troop dies, a new male may kill all his predecessor’s infants. "Orphaned animals need long-term care and rehabilitation. "This crisis is not only about individual animals, it’s about populations, ecosystems, and the future of Costa Rica’s wildlife."
