- Title Extraordinary Discovery: Viral Horn Shark Egg Spotted On Shore Of California Beach
- Summary This horn shark egg was spotted on a beach in Orange County, California, on May 22, revealing an extraordinary embryo inside the casing. Sales representative Rebecca Linh, 30, regularly explores Southern California beaches and came across the egg during one of her ventures. The egg casing resembles a flattened corkscrew, serving as a protective structure and many were surprised to learn that the casing of horn shark eggs is soft despite its glass-like appearance. The dark brown coloration of horn shark egg casings provides effective camouflage, blending with the surrounding rocky environment and offering protection against predators. Rebecca's keen eye as an avid beach explorer allowed her to position the egg against the sun, capturing the mesmerising movements of the embryo inside. Typically, horn shark eggs are wedged into rocks by the mother shark to ensure stability and survival. Unfortunately, this particular egg had been dislodged and washed ashore. Rebecca posted her video to TikTok where it amassed over 25 million views. Rebecca said: I wanted to ensure it had a chance at survival, so I placed it in a nearby tide pool and wedged it in some rocks to give it the best chance of survival. The gestation period for horn sharks varies, but it typically lasts around nine to 12 months and during this time, the embryos develop and grow inside the egg casings until they are ready to hatch.
