A Hooting Mystery: Owl Egg Spontaneously Explodes Live On Bird Watching Camera
Viewers of a nest box camera in Haifa, Israel were left disturbed by the unexpected gross yellow goo that erupted from an egg in place of a barn owl chick.
The owl egg exploded on a live bird camera on 9 June, after a barn owl pair laid three eggs - two of which hatched, with the third egg being non-fertile and coming to an explosive end.
Dr Motti Charter, the wildlife ecologist monitoring the nest box cameras, said: "It happened most likely due to a bacterial infection, which increases the pressure inside of the egg before it exploded.
He confirmed that: "Eggs can indeed explode".
